Although I have never held the formal title of “News Staffer,” I have written numerous news stories throughout my time with ODYSSEY Media Group. These pieces demonstrate my ability to report accurately, meet deadlines and present information clearly while maintaining journalistic integrity.
This breaking news story covers the renovation of the tennis courts at my school and was completed on a tight, self-initiated timeline. I took on the story spontaneously, quickly identified and contacted relevant sources and gathered necessary information under time pressure. After reporting, I moved immediately into the writing and publishing process to ensure the story was timely and accurate.
This breaking news story was on a school in our town receiving a series of notable honors and recognitions. While the reporting process required additional effort to coordinate an interview with the school’s principal, he was highly responsive and kind. I also used this opportunity to experiment with photography by capturing my own images to accompany the story.

While contacting sources and writing the story moved efficiently, securing a group photo of all finalists presented a small challenge. Through follow-up and coordination, I got what was needed and published the piece within 48 hours.

I enjoyed visiting the middle school to conduct in-person interviews and speak directly with the students. In addition to writing the story, I gathered a-roll clips of my sources, strengthening the multimedia component of the coverage.

While the story was taken on randomly, the reporting process took additional time due to the need to contact multiple elementary school principals and follow district procedures. By navigating the district’s communication process, I secured the necessary sources and verified information before writing and publishing the story.
This breaking news story announced the naming of our districts as honor schools. As one of the first breaking news stories I ever wrote, the experience introduced me to the fast-paced nature. Working under tight deadlines allowed me to move quickly a process I found energizing.
